Can you cut COB LED strip light?

The answer is YES for sure, just like SMD LED strip, COB LED strip is flexible, bendable and cuttable as well.

Why is COB flex cuttable

*FPCB (Flexible Printed Circuit Board): COB flex takes FPCB as its carrier for LED chips, this board is soft and thin which enable strip to be cuttable and bendable without damaging the electrical connections

*Circuit design: most of COB tape is designed with specific cutting unit. LED chips forward voltage is low, Vf<3V,so a few chips in series becomes one unit. Normally, soldering pad is reserved for cut.

What precautions shall we take for cutting COB strip

*Tools Preparing: It’s necessary to have all tools ready before cutting, such as scissors, rules, wires, maker, connectors, soldering tools, conductive tape (if needed).

What precautions shall we take for cutting COB strip

*Determine where to cut: Count the strip unit or Use a ruler to find the cut location, better to make marks in case you cut the wrong length by unexpected disturbance. You must cut it according to the scissors mark which it’s the sign of one unit, usually it’s not exactly the same length as you need, you have to decide to keep it shorter or longer.

*How to cut it: Cut the COB LED strip along the determined position using scissors. Ensure the blade of the scissors is as close to the cutting line as possible to achieve a clean and neat cut.

*Wiring: Use soldering tools to solder wire on soldering pad and insulate the soldering pad with shrink tape or conductive tape. For water-proof strip, you have to remove protection materials before soldering and make sure you cover some glue on the soldering pad after soldering. We highly recommend fast connection connectors, saves you a lot of work, click here to check more.

*Testing and installing: Don’t forget to test it before installing, connect it to the driver to make sure no mistake or faulty made in previous operations, like soldering, connecting, insulating, etc.

Testing and installing

In conclusion, you can cut COB strip as desired by adhering the precautions.

Is COB Strip Secure?
In recent years, COB (Chip On Board) lighting technology has become more well-known as a high-performance and energy-efficient lighting option. COB strips have a high output density because they are constructed of numerous small LED chips organized in a matrix on a single board. However, it is vital to determine whether...

Does the LED strips have a driver?
LED strips have almost strict requirements on the driving power. Unlike ordinary incandescent bulbs, LEDs can be directly connected to 220V AC mains. LED is driven by a low voltage of 2 to 3 volts, and complex changing circuits must be designed. LED lights for different purposes must be equipped...

Advantages of COB LED strips
What is a COB LED strip? COB is Chips on Board, which means that the chip is directly packaged on the PCB board. The COB strip is a light strip with chips packaged on a flexible board. Chips are mostly flip chips, which are linearly bonded on the PCB, and then...
