When you request a quotation for custom front-lit LED letters, the first reply may include a drawing, a price, and a production estimate. Before approving it, look beyond the appearance of the letters.
Who approves the illuminated color? What lighting is installed inside? Where will the power supplies sit? Does the shipment include installation accessories? And how will a failed component be replaced?
Before ordering, confirm six things: the finished appearance, internal lighting specification, mounting and power supply locations, installation package, maintenance access, and delivery schedule. These details should appear in the approved drawings or quotation.

Will the Finished Letters Match My Design?
The buyer or appointed designer should approve the artwork, dimensions, finishes, and illuminated appearance before production. The manufacturer should identify any changes required for fabrication.
Supply vector artwork with text converted to outlines. Ask for a drawing showing the complete sign width, character heights, spacing, letter depth, and any visible supports.
If a narrow stroke needs widening or a small opening needs adjusting, have the supplier mark that change on the drawing. It should be reviewed as part of the design approval.
Confirm Daytime and Nighttime Appearance Separately
“White letters” can mean a white face, white illumination, white sides, or all three. Record each requirement separately.
For a color-sensitive project, agree on a physical sample or reference and identify who will approve it. Ask whether the sample uses the proposed face material and LED combination.
A rendered night view helps communicate the intended appearance. It should not be the sole basis for approving actual brightness or color.
For fine lettering or complex logo details, request a fabrication review and ask how the finished lighting will be checked. Resolve these points before accepting the final quotation.

Why Do Quotes for the Same Custom Channel Letter Signs Differ?
The same artwork can produce different prices because materials, internal LED systems, fabrication details, and supply scopes differ. “LED lighting included” does not provide enough information for a useful comparison.

Are LED Modules or LED Strip Lights Included?

Ask the supplier to identify the proposed light source and installation arrangement.

Modules and strips are product categories, not quality grades. A strip-based proposal is not automatically inferior or cheaper, and a module-based proposal is not automatically the better fit.

Where a strip must follow curved lettering, confirm that its permitted bending direction suits the design. Purpose-designed S-type LED strips support layouts that ordinary straight strips may not accommodate in the same way.
How Does the Lighting System Affect the Price?
The quotation should account for the light-source quantity or length, mounting, connections, power supplies, and any controls. Request the proposed total load and power supply selection; LED count or wattage alone is not a complete comparison.
If one supplier quotes modules and another quotes strips, ask both:
- Which exact product will be installed?
- How will it be arranged within the approved lettering?
- How will the finished lighting appearance be checked?
- Which power supplies and wiring are included?
- How will a failed section be replaced?
Then compare face and body materials, finishes, mounting accessories, packaging, and freight on the same basis.
A lower total becomes meaningful when you can see what has changed in the specification or delivery scope.
Where Will the Letters and Power Supplies Be Installed?
The mounting drawing should identify the supporting surface, fixing arrangement, cable routes, and an accessible power supply location. These decisions should be made before fabrication approval.
For building letters or facade letters, provide a straight-on site photograph, available dimensions, wall construction, installation height, and information about access behind the wall.
Ask the supplier and local installer to agree on direct mounting, a raceway, or another support. Include the dimensions and finish of any visible structure in the appearance drawing.

Check Outdoor Suitability and Project Requirements

An IP rating should identify the item it covers. IEC 60529 classifies enclosure protection; a component rating does not by itself establish the rating of an assembled sign. Refer to the official IEC IP Code standard.

Are Installation Accessories Included, and What Should Be Checked on Arrival?
The written supply list establishes what is included. Before mounting, check that the delivered sign, positioning template, installation drawing, and electrical documents agree.
“Ready to install” should be supported by a packing list and installation instructions.
Confirm the Installation Package
Ask whether the order includes:
- A positioning template matching the approved drawing.
- The specified mounting accessories and supports.
- Power supplies and any ordered controllers.
- Identified cables and connection information.
- Installation instructions.
Separately assign responsibility for site-specific fixings, final electrical connections, access equipment, and wall finishing.
Send the documents to the installer before shipment so missing information can be resolved while the manufacturer still has the finished sign.

Before final mounting, have the installer arrange an illumination check according to the supplier’s instructions. Confirm that every letter operates and record noticeable brightness or color differences. Electrical connections should be completed by an appropriately qualified professional.
For outdoor installations, follow the approved details for wall penetrations and connection protection while preserving any specified drainage or ventilation openings.
If the site differs from the drawing, resolve the installation changes before proceeding. At handover, retain photographs, the approved drawing revision, and component model information.
What Happens If an LED or Power Supply Fails?
The supplier should explain how components are accessed, identified, and replaced, and which costs the warranty covers.
Ask about two situations: one letter is dark, and several letters supplied by the same power supply are dark. Find out what diagnostic support the supplier provides and what access the installer will need.
Can the face be opened in place? Must the whole letter be removed? Can the power supply be reached without disturbing the facade?
Request component identification and replacement guidance with the order. Check whether warranty coverage includes replacement parts, shipping, diagnosis, or on-site labor.
For a sign installed high above a storefront, access equipment can be a significant part of a service visit. Include that cost when assessing the maintenance arrangement.
For multi-location projects, ask the supplier to retain the approved finish and lighting specifications for future replacements.
What Should Be Confirmed Before Production Starts?
Before approving custom channel letter signs for production, confirm the drawing revision, matching specifications, supply list, and schedule start conditions.

Production lead time is not arrival time. Ask which approvals and payments start the production clock, and whether the delivery estimate includes the proposed transport and final delivery arrangements.

If the artwork, lighting, or mounting design changes after approval, confirm the effect on price and schedule in writing.
